ATTENTION TAPERS:
Do you record shows yourself when you attend them?
I myself have not done so, but if you do, you may find the following web site useful....
http://www.sonicstudios.com/pa_x.htm
It seems to have lots of technical information (way above my head!) about
microphones, and to be a source for buying high quality equipment.

(Click here for a more detailed index of subjects)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys collecting music bootlegs or has any interest in learning more about them! This is an extremely detailed and comprehensive "inside view" of the methods, actions, and thought processes of the people behind most of the bootlegs made for the first several years of this phenomenon's history. I couldn't put it down.

BILLY JOEL

"Mar Y Sol Festival & Family Records Demos" 1 disc (Soundboard, 17 tracks) Vega Baja, Puerto Rico 4-7-72 - Sound quality is good, except for the fact that it could use a lot more bass and there's lots of tape hiss. The same is true with the demos - No track list or cover art

"SIGMA" 1 disc (13 tracks, Soundboard, recorded from FM) WMMR Studios, Philadelphia, PA 4-15-72 - Sound quality is great, except for the fact that there are small popping noises throughout most of the disc. They are minor, in my opinion. They might be digital noise, or they m,ight be scratches on a record - No track list or cover art

"The Bottom Line '76" 2 discs (Soundboard, recorded from FM) The Bottom Line, New York, NY 6-10-76 - Sound quality is GREAT, but it does have split-second TAO track transitions, and the last track on Disc 1 gets chopped off - Cover art available upon request

"Dan Neer Interview with Billy Joel from 1990" 1 disc (5 tracks, Soundboard) Billy Joel discusses his music. This disc was supposed to be a promo with Storm Front - Sound quality is GREAT - Track list available upon request - No cover art

"London '93" 2 discs (Soundboard) Wembley Stadium, London, England 1993 (Anyone know the exact date?) Sound quality is great - No track list or cover art

"Philadelphia '98" 1 disc (Audience recording) Philadelphia, PA 2-18-98 - Sound quality is really VERY good, but there are 3-second gaps between tracks, and some close-up audience clapping - No track list or cover art

"A&E; His Own Words" 2 discs (Soundboard, recorded from TV) Philadelphia PA 1-10-00 - A&E Special - Also includes "60 Minutes" TV spot - This is a fascinating show. Billy performs several songs, with commentary between, and sometimes in the middle of songs - Sound quality is excellent, except for a few 'filler' tracks that are from an audience recording. Also, some of the editing between tracks is imperfect. - No track list or cover art

"Hartford 2002"  3 discs (Soundboard) Billy Joel & Elton John, Hartford, CT 2-8-02 - Sound quality is WONDERFUL, but it has split-second TAO gaps - No track list or cover art

"Turnstiles Outtakes" 1 disc (Studio) Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY 1975 - Sound quality is very good overall, but tracks 9,10 have some scratchy poppy noises. It doesn't sound like digital corruption to me. I'm pretty sure those tracks just came from an old album that has some scratches on it, because the noises have a repetitive pattern. To me, they are no big deal. Also, there's some tape hiss, and the basic signal is a little low, so you have to turn it up - There are a few assorted live tracks at the end of the disc - No track list or cover art

"Getting Closer" 1 disc (Studio soundboard) Innocent Man & Bridge Outtakes - Great sound quality - No track list or cover art

"Glass Houses Demos" 1 disc (20 tracks, Studio soundboard) Demos from the making of the "Glass Houses" album - Sound quality is pretty good but not great. Sounds like it might have gone through a few generations on cassette, but at some point might have recieved some touch-up work to remove tape hiss. It's fairly clear, but a little muffled. - Track list - Cover art available on request

"GlassHouses Outtakes" 2 discs (Soundboard) This seems to be mostly the same tracks as "Glass Houses Demos", with probably a few extras, although some sound like repeats - Sound quality is about the same too - No track list or cover art

"In the Studio; Glass Houses" 1 disc (Soundboard, from FM) Billy discusses making Glass Houses - Includes commercials - Sound quality is excellent - No track list or cover art

"StormFront Outtakes" 1 disc (Soundboard) Sounds very muffled and the signal is very low, with a great deal of tape hiss on most tracks - No track list or cover art

"Outtakes" 1 disc (11 tracks, Studio) Various studio demos, outtakes, and unmixed tracks - No drums - Sound quality is great - No track list or cover art

"Interview - Behind Nylon Curtains" 1 disc (Approx 72:56 min.) London, UK - Roger Scott talks with Billy Joel about his new album "Nylon Curtain". Billy answers questions on each song. Each track from the album follows his response - From Promotional Cassette Tape - Sound quality is excellent - No track list or cover art

"Retold Volume 1; The Bridge To 52nd Street" 1 disc (17 tracks, Studio, Approx 71 min.) Various Demos - Sound quality is GREAT! - Track list available upon request - No cover art

"Retold Volume 2; The Piano Man From The Harbor" 1 disc (16 tracks, Approx 70 min.) Various studio demos, The Piano Man, From The Harbor alternate, unreleased and live tracks - Sound quality is excellent! - Track list and liner notes available upon request - No cover art

"Retold Volume 3; "Souvenir Of A Stranger At The Turnstile" 1 disc (19 tracks, Approx 72 min.) I'm not sure if this was on TV or what, but it's Billy telling the history and stories behind songs, and then playing songs or parts of songs (with a complete band). It sounded like it might be incomplete. - Sound quality is great, but there are 2-second gaps between tracks - Track list available upon request - No cover art

ALSO OF INTEREST...

"Minnesota Blues; XXII Anniversary Live" 1 disc - The cover art says Diluth, MN 10-19-68, but I have it on very good authority that this is wrong. The correct date is actually 4-1-71, although the disc also contains songs from the 6-27-69 show. This is supposedly a very famously mislabeled CD. The oldest live Led Zep recording is Gonzaga 12-30-68, and there are no known surviving recording earlier than that. Not only is the date wrong, but the title "Minnesota Blues" is actually from a mis-pronounciation of Mess O' Blues, part of the Whole Lotta Love medely that night. - Sound quality not yet rated - Cover art (with above described errors) available upon request

"Secret History of Led Zeppelin" 1 disc - Sound quality not yet rated - Cover art available upon request

"The Killer's Private Stash" 1 disc (Studio) Tracks are from various sources and quality, from scratchy old records to great sounding recordings. Sounded like some tracks might have been demos or alternate versions of songs. Other than this I can't give you any more real details about this CD. If you know more, please tell me. - No track list or cover art

"WMC-FM Live Broadcast" 1 disc (Soundboard, from FM) Memphis, TN 10-30-73 - Sound quality is GREAT! - No cover art

"Filmore West 1974" 1 disc (Soundboard) Sound quality is GREAT. There are some pops, but they're not too distracting in my opinion. They might not even be digital, this might have just been transferred from vinyl. Also, this entire show seems to play a tiny, tiny bit fast, unless it's my imagination. And tracks 7-10 are silent, so I don't know if part of the show is missing or if nothing is supposed to be there - No track list or cover art

"Woman of Mine" 1 disc (14 tracks, Soundboard) Chatanooga, TN 3-10-75 - This show was a few days before the release of their third album - Sound quality is great. There is a quick gap between tracks 6,7 and I think tracks 9-14 are from a different show - No cover art

"The Old Grey Whistle Test" 1 disc (Soundboard, from TV) London, England 11-5-75 - Sound quality is 'very good' but not 'great'. This recording may have endured a few generations on cassette - No cover art

"First Gig In Canada" 1 disc (8 tracks) Live at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Canada, 9-23-85 - Converted from MP3 - I'm not sure if this is an audience or soundboard recording. The sound quality is reasonably good, but a little muffly. Also it has some digital pops, but those are hardly noticeable. There are split-second TAO gaps between tracks. - One interesting thing was that Yngwie does a little bit of Van Halen's "Eruption" during his guitar solo....perhaps as a joke, or maybe as a tribute. - No cover art

"James Taylor & Joni Mitchell" (Also circulated under the name "BBC Radio Broadcast" with the incorrect year 1971, and also circulated under the name "Second Night" with the incorrect date 10-29-70) 1 disc (15 tracks, Soundboard) Live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England 10-28-70 - GREAT sound quality - Cover art can be obtained here

"James Taylor & Joni Mitchell" (Often circulated under the name "Second Night" with the incorrect date 10-29-70) 2 discs (24 tracks, Soundboard) Live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England 10-28-70. This is the same show as above, but on 2 discs, and with bonus tracks of Joni Mitchell - GREAT sound quality - Cover art can be obtained here

"People's Parties" 1 disc (Soundboard) People's Parties 8-17-74 Compilation - No real details known, but I can tell you it's a misleading title. These most certainly are NOT recordings made at people's parties. - Sound quality is excellent - No track list or cover art

"Budokan '83" 2 discs (Soundboard) Budokan Tokyo, Japan 3-7-83 - Sound quality is GREAT, but there are split-second TAO gaps between tracks - No track list or cover art

"He's Got A Friend Named Joni" 1 disc (17 tracks, Soundboard) James Taylor live in Mansfield, MA 1-1-94 - The title of this CD misled me to think this was another show where Joni Mitchell made a guest appearance. It's not. The last two tracks are Joni Mitchell, but they're from the "James Taylor & Joni Mitchell" 10-28-70 show, thrown onto the end of this disc just to fill up extra space - Sound quality is excellent, but there is one skip a few seconds into track 1 - No track list or cover art

"Painting with words & music" 2 discs - Los Angeles, CA 1999 - Sound quality not yet rated - No track list or cover art

"Blue Sessions" (Also circulated under the name "Alternate Blue Album") 1 disc (10 tracks, Studio, 37 min.) July 1970 - Incredible songs & excellent sound! I absolutely treasure this CD! - Please note: This is the third copy of this CD I obtained. The first two had digital pops & clicks. But finally I found a copy that sounds perfect. So if you have this CD, you might want to check if it has the pops and clicks, and if it does, you may want to obtain a copy of mine - No track list or cover art

"Alternate Hissing Of Summer Lawns" 1 disc (Studio, 51 min.) Presumably these are studio session recordings from which the album was made. Also, there are several old radio advertisements for three Joni Mitchell albums: "Joni Mitchell" (1'st album), "Clouds", and "Ladies of the Canyon". - Sound quality is basically great, except unfortunately there are popping or scratching noises through the whole disc. These might not be digital corruption. They might be scratches from an actual LP. Not sure. On the early tracks it is subtle and not too obtrusive. But later in the disc they are much more prominent. - No track list or cover art
