ATTENTION TAPERS:
Do you record shows yourself when you attend them?
I myself have not done so, but if you do, you may find the following web site useful....
http://www.sonicstudios.com/pa_x.htm
It seems to have lots of technical information (way above my head!) about
microphones, and to be a source for buying high quality equipment.

(Click here for a more detailed index of subjects)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys collecting music bootlegs or has any interest in learning more about them! This is an extremely detailed and comprehensive "inside view" of the methods, actions, and thought processes of the people behind most of the bootlegs made for the first several years of this phenomenon's history. I couldn't put it down.

1986:

"Birmingham FM" 1 disc (10 tracks, Soundboard) N.E.C. Hall, Birmingham, England 4-10-86 (Celebration Tour) - Great sound quality - Track list - Cover art can be obtained here

"Kir Royal" 2 discs (Soundboard?) London, England 4-17-86 (Celebration Tour) - I was told this is a soundboard recording, but it sounds like it might be an audience recording. Nevertheless, it sounds very good - Cover art available upon request

"Black Celebration" 1 Disc (16 tracks, Audience recording?) Brussells, Belgium 10-5-86 - Very good sound quality. There are no gaps between tracks, but "It's Called a Heart" is clipped off prematurely, and some of the other track transitions are abrupt. Sloppy editing I guess. - Track list - Cover art available upon request

"Old Grey Whistle Test" 1 disc (Soundboard, Recorded from TV, 13:30 Running Time) 1986 Interviews, Documentary + A Question Of Time & Fly On The Windscreen - Live material from a Paris show (?) - Sound quality not yet rated - No track list or cover art

1987:

"In Situations Like These" 2 discs (Audience recording) Barcelona, Spain 10-23-87 (Concert For The Masses Tour) - Sound quality is 'good' to 'very good' - No track list or cover art

"Italian Tour 1987" 2 discs (19 tracks, Audience recording) Live at The Palasport, Rome, Italy 10-27-87.  This may be actually in October 1987, not November 1987 as the sleeve says. The sound is really good for an audience recording - Track list available upon request - No cover art

"Live In Turin 10-29-87 " 1 disc (16 tracks, Audience recording) Turin, Palasport 10-29-87 (Concert For The Masses Tour) Sound quality is between 'Fair' and 'Good'. There's lots of crowd noise, and track 1 has a lot of "fiddling with the recording device microphone" noises. Also, in order to fit the show on 1 disc, someone shaved off the last 3 tracks "A Question of Lust", "Master and Servant" and "Everything Counts" - Cover art for the 2-disc version "Sitting Waiting" available upon request

"Concert Of Liberty" 2 discs (Audience recording) Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 12-18-87 (Concert For The Masses Tour) Sound quality is poor. Very screechy, noisy, distored in a few places, lots of high-levels, and also has lots of close-up audience noise - Cover art available upon request

Top of DM List / Top of Page

1988:

"See The Stars" 2 discs (30 tracks, Audience recording) The first 19 tracks are live in Birmingham, England 1-9-88 (Sound quality is very good), the last 11 tracks are N.E.C. Hall, Birmingham, England 4-10-86 (Sound quality is very good) - There are some problems during "Master And Servant" and a few other songs where the sound cuts out for a split second here and there - Track list available upon request - Cover art available upon request

"Live In Bordeaux '88" 1 disc (Audience recording) Bordeaux, 2-27-88 (Concert For The Masses Tour) - Sound quality is poor. It sounds like it was recorded from the hallway (of the Burger King around the block). Very bassy, and the music is distorted. Lots of audience noise and some talking - No track list or cover art

"East Side" 2 discs (Audience recording) Werner Selenbinder, East Berlin, Germany 3-7-88 (Concert For The Masses Tour) Sound quality is 'fair' at best. Pretty noisy, scratchy, tinny, and hissy. Plus it has split-second TAO gaps between tracks - Cover art available upon request

"Vienna '88" 2 discs (Audience recording) Stadthalle, Vienna 3-13-88 (Concert For The Masses Tour) Great sound quality. Nice full tones. Very little audience noise. But it does have split-second TAO track transitions - No track list or cover art

"Eternal Glory" 2 discs (Audience recording) The Shoreline Amphitheatre, San Francisco, CA 4-29-88 (Concert For The Masses Tour) - Also includes a few remixes to fill up space - Sound quality ranges from 'good' to 'very good', but is a bit muffled - Cover art available upon request

"Minneapolis '88" 1 disc (Audience recording) Northorp Auditorium, Minneapolis, MN 5-18-88 (Concert For The Masses Tour) Sound quality would be good, but there's some hiss, and unfortunately lots of digital pops and clicks, as well as split-second TAO gaps. - No track list or cover art

1990:

"Black Violation" 2 discs (Audience recording) Milwaukee Marcus Amphitheater, Milwaukee, WI 6-30-90 - Reasonably good sound quality, but rather muffled sounding. Also has 2-second TAO gaps between tracks - Cover art available upon request

"Celebration in Houston" (Also called "Black Celebration in Texas") 2 discs (Audience recording) Woodlands, Houston, TX 7-6-90 - Very good sound quality. The music and vocals are crisper and clearer than some audience recordings. But there's a lot of crowd noise such as talking - Cover art can be obtained here

"Sweetest Silence" 2 discs (Audience recording) Nagoya, Japan 9-9-90 - The sound quality is really very good, but there are a number of little 'snap, crackle, pop' noises, particularly at the start of each disc. I don't know what these are. Pssibly digital imperfections of some sort. They are not very loud, and don't deter from my enjoyment. Despite those little noises, this might be the best sounding 1990 show in my collection. "Une Nuit a la Mode" is a close second - Cover art available upon request

"Swiss Made" 2 discs (Audience recording) Zurich, Switzerland 10-12-90 - The sound is reasonably good, but very, very muffled - Cover art available upon request

"Une Nuit a la Mode" 2 discs (Audience recording) Milan, Italy 11-11-90 - Very good sound quality for an audience recording. You don't hear as much close-up audience clapping or talking as you normally do. The music still sounds a little bit muffled though, but again, not as much as on other audience recordings - Cover art can be obtained here

"As Time Goes By" 2 discs (Audience recording) London 11-20-90 - Reasonably good sound quality, but it is very muffled - Track list - Cover art available upon request

1993:

"Mode On the Road" 2 discs (18 tracks, Audience recording) Lille, Lille Espace Foire, France 5-19-93 (Some sources say 5-10-93 or 5-11-93 ??) This was the first gig of the Devotional Tour- Very good sound quality - Low-res front cover art available upon request

"Devotional Disease" 1 disc - First show of the tour - Lille, France 5-19-93 - Sound quality not yet rated - Cover art available upon request

"Dogma" 1 disc (Soundboard) London , England 7-31-93 (Same show as "Enjoy the Rumours", and also circulated under the totally inaccurate title "Live in Chicago 1992", and also the names "I Feel You", Devotional Jump", "Captured Live in Europe" and "Big Show at Crystal Palace") - Great sound quality - Cover art available upon request

"Devotions" 2 discs (Soundboard) 1993 (Exact date or location anyone?) - Great sound quality - Track list - No cover art

Top of DM List / Top of Page

1994:

"Honolulu 1994" 2 discs (Soundboard) Honolulu, HI 3-26-94 - This was Fletch's last show on this tour - Sound quality is GREAT! You can barely hear the audience at all. It could use a tiny bit more bass, but it's a minor complaint. Overall it's a very enjoyable listen. A few other small mentionable things... there are split-second TAO gaps, the show is broken up into just a few long tracks, 'Rush' is missing, 'Halo' fades in, and there are some digital defects at the start of "A Question Of Lust". - No track list or cover art

"Summer Tour 1994" (Also called "Santiago Radio Broadcast") 2 discs (Soundboard) Santiago, Chile 4-10-94 - Very good quality - Cover art available upon request

"Rated PG" (Also circulated under the name "Every Now & Then") 2 discs (Soundboard) Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountainview, San Francisco CA 5-14-94 (Same show as the "Walking to the Shoreline", except no remixes. Instead, there are 4 songs from Birmingham 4-10-86) - Sound quality is one of the best I've heard. Audience noise has been largely minimized - Cover art available upon request

"Live In David Gahan's Pants" 1 disc (Audience recording) Irvine, CA 5-20-94 (Devotional Tour) - Sound quality is excellent! This disc is incorrectly labeled as a 'soundboard recording' on some lists, but it is actually an audience recording. It's just a truly GREAT audience recording. One of the best I've heard. Basically the only thing that gives it away is the talking that can be heard. This is most noticeable at the beginning of track 8, where you can clearly hear an extensive conversation about someone moving to the side so someone else can see better. - Cover art available upon request

"Mississippi '94" 2 discs - Gulf Coast Coliseum, Mississippi 6-5-94 - Not yet rated - No track list or cover art

"Jones Beach" 2 discs (Audience recording) Wantagh Theatre, Wantagh, NY 6-16-94 - Sound quality is very good - Cover art available upon request

"MTV Live in Cologne" 1 disc (Soundboard) Cologne Arena, Cologne 10-5-98 (Note: This is basically the same as "First Night at the Arena", except it has no bonus remixes. "Live in Paris Bercy" 2 discs (Audience recording) Palais Omnisport, Paris Le Bercy, France 10-7-98 - Sound quality not yet rated - Cover art available upon request

The recording cuts in halfway through the first song 'World in my Eyes', and cuts out a few times. - Cover art available upon request

REMIXES AND MISC:

"Exciter Test Cut" 1 disc (Soundboard) I don't really have any details about this one, but it is supposedly just what the title sounds like .. a 'test cut' of Exciter, done prior to the final release. What this means is a mystery to me - I don't know its origin, or what it was for, or even if it truly is a test cut. It includes all the tracks from Exciter (basically indistinguishable from their final versions, if these aren't the final versions) plus a track that didn't make it onto Exciter called "Dirt" (which was released later on the "I Feel Loved" single) - Perfect sound quality - Sorry, no art

"Matty's Collection of Exciter Remixes" 2 discs (Soundboard) Absolutely AWESOME! The best I've heard! - Great sound quality - Track list - Cover art available upon request

"Exciter DJ Remix Collection" 3 discs (Soundboard) Some of these remixes are excellent - Great sound quality, but these tracks were apparently converted from MP3, based on a frequency analysis someone did on them - Track list - Original cover art available upon request

"Misc. Exciter Remixes" 2 discs (Soundboard) Great sound quality - This disc was apparently converted from MP3, based on a frequency analysis someone did on it - Track list - No art

* * * ALSO OF INTEREST TO DEPECHE MODE FANS... * * *

MPEG CD: "MTV Presents Depeche Mode" 1 disc (MPEG CD) This is not a 'VCD' (It will not play on a VCD or DVD player). It is a collection of videos in MPEG format which can be viewed on your computer using the a movie program such as Quicktime (which can be downloaded for free from apple.com if you don't already have it). I watched it at almost full screen size, with headphones on, and was TOTALLY blown away by the high quality of the video and the sound! This is AWESOME! It is professional live concert footage of Depeche Mode in Koln, Germany in 1998, broadcast on MTV. Featuring these songs: Intro, A Question of Time, Enjoy the Silence, Home, I Feel You, It's No Good, Never Let Me Down Again, Only When I Lose Myself, and Personal Jesus. It also has a bonus video: In Your Room, from their appearance on The David Letterman Show. Each song is its own file and must be clicked individually to watch.

VCD: "MTV Presents Depeche Mode" 1 disc (VCD) This is the same as the above disc, except this is a VCD. It also has a bonus video: In Your Room, from a performance on The David Letterman Show. The audio & video quality are GREAT! Please note that the songs are not arranged in their correct order, and there is a small gap between each song, as the tracks make their transition from one to the next.
VCD: "Los Angeles '97" 1 disc (VCD, 1 track, 30 min.) Live at the Shrine Expo Hall, Los Angeles, CA 5-16-97 - I was told them was a pro shot, but that doesn't seem true to me. It looks like an audience shot, but it's very good..very steady for example (Although it is very, very blurry and grainy), and the sound quality is very good - Cover art available upon request

VCD: "Rockscene '85" 1 disc (VCD, 1 track, 40 min., From TV) TV broadcast, Guehenno 7-14-85 - Video and audio quality are both very good - No track list or cover art

VCD - "Zagreb 2001" 2 discs (VCD, 1 track per disc, Audience) Zagreb, Croatia 11-3-01 - Quality is between fair and good. The position is good and steady, making good use of the zoom lens, but it is very grainy - Cover art available upon request

VCD: "Oslo 2001" 2 discs (VCD, Audience, 115 min.) Oslo 9-22-01 (Shot from upper left) The camera position and steadiness are very good, but the general quality of the video and audio are merely 'fair' - Cover art available upon request

EXCITER EPK: 2 discs - I'm not sure, but I think EPK stands for "Electronic Press Kit", like perhaps this is a set of discs which was distributed to the press. Disc 1 is a CD-ROM with interview, Dream On video, Exciter lyrics & more. Disc 2 is an interview CD. Unfortunately the CD-ROM is not Mac-compatible, so I haven't been able to use it yet myself. I assume it will work on a PC, but cannot guarantee it. - Sound quality of the interview CD is excellent - No other details known - Cover art available upon request

"I Sometimes Wish I Were Famous" 1 disc (16 tracks, Studio) Various artists: A 1991 Swedish tribute to Depeche Mode - Sound quality is excellent - No track list or cover art
